Whitmore, Margaret Isabel (nee Atkinson)
On, January 17th, 2016, in her 96th year, Margaret passed away peacefully at the Brantford General Hospital (Palliative Care). Beloved wife of the late William George Atkinson (1959) and the late Russell Clarence Whitmore (1994). She is survived by her son Joseph William Atkinson (Judy), of Uxbridge, and her daughter Peggy Louise Hallam (Bill), of St. Catharines. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and her sister Olive Nant, of Moose Jaw, Sask. She was predeceased by her parents Lena and Louis Hanson, of Moose Jaw and her sister Lois, of Vancouver, B.C. Margaret was born in Estevan, Sask and grew up in Moose Jaw, where she graduated from Normal School in 1939. She taught elementary and secondary school in the Assiniboia District, of Sask. She enlisted in the R.C.A.F. (W.D.) in 1942 and served three years in Halifax at Eastern Air Command, in Gander, Nfld, and in Yorkshire, England at 6th bomber group Headquarters in the Navigation Section. While living in New Toronto after the war, Margaret was active in guiding and scouting. she was a Past President of the Home and School Federation, and the Anglican Church Women, and a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. After her marriage to Russ, and upon his retirement, the couple moved to Strathroy and travelled extensively in Canada and the U.S. for ten years before settling in Brantford in 1985. They were both active members of Grace Anglican Church. At her request, cremation has been arranged through the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, (519) 752-4331. A Private Celebration of her life will be held in the summer, followed by an interment of her ashes at Park Lawn Cemetery in Etobicoke. Margaret has asked that donations of remembrance be made to Grace Anglican Church, the CNIB, or the Arthritis Society. The family wishes to sincerely thank the wonderful staff of Riverview Terrace for the loving care provided over the past eleven years, Margaret's doctor and friend Dr. Jeff Manning, and the medical and support staff of the Brantford General Hospital.
