The Honourable Edward Oswald Fanjoy -
The Honourable Edward Oswald Fanjoy, in his 88th year, passed away peacefully on Wed March 3, 2010, at the Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford, ON.
Born on September 6, 1922 in Hartland, New Brunswick. He was the eldest of eight children to William Clements Fanjoy and Mildred Lenora Fanjoy (nee Brooks). Loving husband of 60 years to Margaret Emeline Fanjoy (nee McKinney) and loving father to Bill (Marg McKillop), Beth, John (Tina Porter), Marie (Craig Mann) and predeceased by son David Edward. Proud Grandfather to Alexandria, Eryn, Taylor, Alec, Ellen, David and Thomas. Brother to Esther, Newton, Bill, Margo and the late Audrey, Shirley and Robert.
Ed lived in St. John, NB until 1931 when his family moved to a farm in the Hartland area of New Brunswick. Graduated from Normal School (Fredericton) in 1940, Ed joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. During WWII he was a radar technician in the RAF228 Squadron. After the war, he attended UNB from 1945 to 1949 and was the Valedictorian of the first wartime class. A member of the Eastern Canadian Intercollegiate Debating Team, the team won the 1948 Eastern Champion ship. During the summer of 1947 he worked as a literacy teacher for Frontier College in the Sudbury area.
On August 20, 1949, he and his life partner, Margaret, were married at Greenoch Presbyterian Church in St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea, N. B.. He obtained a Science Degree in Geology and in '51 obtained a Law Degree from UNB. In the same year he was awarded an overseas Beaverbrook Scholarship to study at the London School of Economics. Whilst studying in London, through Lord Beaverbrook, he had the honour of meeting Sir Winston Churchill.
Ed practiced law in Peterborough, Ontario, for 3 years and in 1955 relocated to St. Thomas, Ontario, to set up his own practice with long time friend Harold Stafford. He served many offices while in St. Thomas including; President of the YMCA, Member of the Library Board, Member of the Planning Board, President of the Lions Club and was the Mayor of St. Thomas from 1969 to 1972.
Called to the Bench in 1972, the family relocated to Brantford where he has resided since. He served as a Superior Court Justice until 1997 and was a member of the Pension Appeals Board until 2006. In Brantford, Ed served on the Police Services Board for 20 years and he was the author of the manual for Police Commissions and sat on the Committee that wrote the Police Services Act. He also sat on the Paris Police Commission. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Brantford and was a golfing member of the Brantford Golf and Country Club.
Very much a family man, he loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His greatest sorrow was the passing of his son David at the age of 23 while mountain climbing in the Canadian Rockies.
Ed has been blessed with great friends and colleagues from all facets of his life. He treasured the time he spent with his beloved sister Esther.
Friends and family will be received at Beckett Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave, Brantford, with visitation taking place on Friday March 5th from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm. On Saturday March 6th at. St. Andrew's United Church, 95 Darling Street, Brantford, visitation will take place from 10 - 11 am followed by the funeral service at 11 am. Interment at Farringdon Burial Ground will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Brantford Public Library, St. Thomas Public Library or the Brant Community Healthcare System would be appreciated.
