MOOR, Merle Eva (Costain) B.A., M.A. December 26, 1916 - August 25, 2009 Guidance Department Brantford Collegiate Institute, 1958-1981 At London, Ontario, on August 25, 2009. Devoted wife of the late Thomas Dixon Moor. Loving mother of the Rev. John (Sharon) of Ottawa, Lorne (Susan) of Cambridge, and Bruce (the late Patricia) of London. Proud Grandmother of Steven (Cynthia Johnston), Jeffrey (Vincent Liu), Janice (Paul Knudson), Deborah (Graham Marshall), Cyndie, Melisa (David Cates), Tara Harvie (Shawn Gilbertson), Alyssa, and Evan. Adored Great- Grandmother of Colin, Morgan, Georgia, Jake, Emily, Josie, Courtney, and Jocelyn. Dear Aunt and Great-Aunt of numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Elida Costain, a sister Lena (Wendell Atchison), and brothers Cecil (Cynthia), Russell (Errol), Carmen and Stephen. Born in Stavely, Alberta, Merle moved with her family to Ponoka, Alberta, Evesham and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Saskatchewan from 1933-1935 and 1937-1938, graduating with an honours B.A. in English, French and German. In October, 1938 she married T. Dixon Moor, also of Saskatoon, and together they lived in White Fox and Regina in Saskatchewan; Port Arthur, Ontario, and lastly in Brantford, Ontario. In 1953 she began teaching, first in elementary schools in rural Port Arthur, then secondary school in Port Arthur, and finally at Brantford Collegiate Institute. Merle was always an active member of the United Church wherever she lived, teaching Sunday School, serving with the Women's Association or the United Church Women, a C.G.I.T. leader, and as an Elder in the latter years at St. Andrew's United Church, Brantford. She was also a long serving member of Erie Presbytery and Hamilton Conference. Merle was also a skilled sewer and quilt maker, an avid bridge player with her many friends, a traveller with Dixon to many parts of the world, and an inveterate reader. In the community she served with Brantford Christmas Baskets for fifteen years. In 2006, following her 90th birthday, she moved to London to the Highview Residences retirement community where she received wonderful, loving care from all the staff in her last years. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, 95 Darling St., Brantford, on Saturday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the church, to which everyone is invited. There will be a private committal at Farringdon Burial Ground, Brantford. Memorial donations may be made to the T. Dixon Moor Award (Children's Aid Society of Brant, Endowment Fund), the Memorial Fund of St. Andrew's United Church, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Avenue, Brantford. A tree will be planted in memory of Merle in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
