Obituary of Don Smith

Passed away peacefully at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford with family by his side on Saturday, October 14, 2023 in his 101st year. Don has been reunited with the love of his life, his late wife Mary (2008). He is predeceased by his daughter Marilyn (Roger) Phelps (2017) and will be deeply missed by his son, Gary Smith (Angela Clark). Cherished grandfather of Jen (Mike) Recine, Julie Phelps, Angie (Brahm) Wiseman and Sarah Phelps, and great-grandfather of Hayden and Jasper. Don is predeceased by his parents Jesse and Alice, his sister Muriel (Ted), brother Norm (Audrey) and sister Velma (Byron). He will be missed by his extended family including many nieces and nephews and their families, and neighbours and friends. A special thank you to Gloria Picanco who supported Don’s care the last couple of years with a warmth, kindness and friendship so appreciated by Don and the family. The family would also like to thank the wonderful staff on C4 of the Brantford General Hospital, and nurse Tara and the staff and volunteers at Stedman Community Hospice for their exceptional care in Don’s final days. Don served in the Canadian Navy during WWII and as Fire Chief for the Brantford Township for 14 years, retiring in 1984. He was also a highly skilled patternmaker, enjoying his woodworking pursuits well into his later years. He adored his family and friends, and his warmth, kindness and sense of humour will be deeply missed by all who knew him. At the family's request, a private service will be taking place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave., Brantford (519) 752-4331. Donations to the Stedman Community Hospice or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Don in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
