Obituary of George Mannering

Mannering, George Charles- Passed away at sunset on August 18th, 2023, in his 94 th year. Beloved husband of Mary for 67 years till the time of her passing in March of 2020. Loving father of Matthew and his wife Janice, and John and his wife Nan. George will be deeply missed by his sister-in-law Isabella, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. During World War 2 George was twice evacuated from London to the countryside where he spent time living on farms. This opened his eyes to the wider world and probably planted the seed for his later emigration to Canada with his wife Mary. George became a newspaper pressman at the age of 14 and spent the next 50 years working for various newspapers. The majority of his career was spent at the Toronto Star and he retired from there in the early 90’s. He most enjoyed doing the colour work setup on the presses for the Saturday edition. George was a voracious reader of history and politics and enjoyed classical music and crosswords. He loved to eat and had a huge appetite though he never put on weight, much to the chagrin of his sons. In recent years, George looked forward to his long summer vacations at his son John’s fishing camp in northern Ontario. John and Nan always made a huge fuss of him, and he really appreciated it. The staff of the palliative care ward at BGH who took care of George and his family during his last days. At the request of the family, arrangements will remain private. A tree will be planted in memory of George in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
